There are several species of bird. Most of the smaller ones are migratory and fly south for the winter, but the ptarmigan (of course you don't need to be told how to pronounce that) stays all year round. This one is in the middle of changing from its summer plumage to the all-white winter plumage. We saw several groups of three or four of them.
